Everything a Beginner Needs to Know about Essential Oils
A few years ago I had a health crisis,
and ever since I have been on the hunt for any natural ways to support wellness. Finding essential oils completely changed my life, and now I want to share them with every person I meet!
There are three reasons I use essential oils:
1. They support physical wellness
I apply essential oils to my skin every single day. When you use an essential oil topically, your body absorbs it and uses it to support different body systems. You can use oils to support your immune system, digestive system, respiratory system, cardiovascular system, endocrine system, nervous system, lymphatic system, musculoskeletal system, skin…I could go on but you get the point. Basically any part of your body can benefit from the use of essential oils.
2. They support emotional wellness
I am constantly using essential oils aromatically. When you inhale an essential oil, the molecules travel up your nose directly to your limbic system, the part of your brain that controls memories and emotions. Because of this, I have found them to be a huge game changer when it comes to dealing with difficult emotions like stress or the blues.
3. They are a natural alternative
I have been able to replace almost all of the toxic chemicals in my home by using essential oils as a natural alternative. By combining natural ingredients with essential oils I have been able to replace all of my toxic home cleaners, as well as my toxic personal care products like perfume
, lotion, deodorant
, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, hairspray,
Just in case you haven’t heard of them…….
Essential Oils are the lifeblood of the plant. To collect an essential oil you take the fluid from inside of the plant, which contains the plant’s immune system and hundreds of natural protective chemicals, and you concentrate it. The molecules that make up an essential oil are so tiny that, when you put them on your skin, they are absorbed directly into your cells.
How Do You Use Them?
There are three ways to use essential oils. You can apply them directly on your skin. You can use them aromatically by inhaling them directly from the bottle or with a diffuser. You can also use them internally by putting them in vegetable capsules or a beverage. Just be sure to check the label of every bottle to read its intended use (it’s only safe to use all three of these application methods with therapeutic grade essential oils
Aren’t They Just the Newest Fad?
Nope! People have been using essential oils since at least 4500 B.C. They were being used by people all over the world, including the Greeks, Chinese, Indians, and Ancient Egyptians. They are also mentioned over 180 times in the Bible. If you want to learn more about the history of essential oils, read this post.
Are All Oils Created Equal?
Not all essential oils are made the same. Just like when it comes to feeding your children, the quality DOES matter. Imagine if I never gave my child a real piece of fruit, and instead only fed them “fruit-flavored” gummies. Would it be realistic for me to expect them to be just as healthy? NO. If I want to see good results, I need to use a good product. A cheap imitation just isn’t going to cut it.
That’s why when I started looking into essential oils, I knew that I had to find the purest, most high quality option. This turned out to be a lot harder than I thought. I quickly found out that most of the oils being sold on the market today are made in a lab using synthetic ingredients, instead of the plant material God intended for us to use. It’s just like the strawberry gummies, they may look and smell and taste great, but they don’t have anything of value to contribute to our health. On top of that, many of the labels they are putting on bottles are purposely deceptive. For example, for a company to legally put the word “pure” on a bottle of oil, the bottle only needs to contain 5% essential oil. The other 95% can be anything! Synthetic oils are a problem because essential oil molecules are so small that they get absorbed directly into your cells. If your essential oils are filled with synthetic materials, or even pesticides, those foreign materials are getting absorbed directly into your cells TOO. Not only will this not promote wellness, it will probably cause even more health challenges, which defeats the whole purpose of using essential oils in the first place.
Another thing I found out, is that even though chemists are trying to recreate synthetic essential oils in a lab, no one actually know what the ingredients are! Each essential oil contains around 100-400 chemical compounds. But no scientist has ever been able to identify more than 30 compounds in any individual oil. Meaning that when you buy a synthetic essential oil, you are already guaranteed to be missing hundreds of ingredients. Those may be the exact ingredients God intended for us to be using to promote wellness. I really love this analogy that explains it: Imagine if a baker tried to recreate the most delicious chocolate chip cookie recipe ever, but did not know all of the ingredients. He didn’t know that he needed to add sugar, but decided to recreate the recipe anyway, because he thought the missing ingredients “wouldn’t really matter.” Would the cookies be the same if there were no sugar? There would actually be no point in making the cookies at all if you were missing just this one ingredient. Imagine how much you are missing out on when you buy essential oils that are missing almost all of the original ingredients.
Why Young Living Specifically?
They are the only company I know of that matches all of the criteria listed above. My favorite thing about them is that they have the Seed to Seal guarantee. This means that they control the process of making the oils, all the way from planting the seed, to delivering it to your doorstep. They are the only essential oil company in the world that owns all of their own farms instead of buying plants from others, which means they are the only company that can guarantee their oils contain no pesticides or harmful chemicals.
It’s important to do a lot of research before picking an essential oil company. I found out that even if some companies were making cheaper oils, that didn’t mean that I was actually saving money. Or more importantly, doing anything of value for my health.
