Our journey started in 2010…
Teri – I used to be proud of the fact that my family was always so healthy.
I only took my children to the doctor for check-ups, and none of them had ever been prescribed an antibiotic. Everything was rocking along great and I was doing an awesome job as a mom caring for my husband and kids…Right? No major problems here!
That’s what I thought up until 2010. My daughter Allison suddenly became very ill, and we had to go through a long journey to find answers to her health problems. It took about five years, but she was finally diagnosed with Lupus. You can read a more in depth story of her illness here. During this process my husband became very sick, and he was eventually diagnosed with Lupus as well. In addition to all of that, I realized I was getting sick when I started noticing unusual health symptoms. They led to tests that determined that I had thyroid cancer, and I eventually had my thyroid surgically removed. We had prayed for years for God to point us in the right direction, and we are extremely grateful that He allowed us to be diagnosed so that we could start the process of healing.
So there we were, a husband and daughter with Lupus, myself short a thyroid (I had no idea how much I would miss it!), and three more kids that really didn’t feel that great come to think of it.
That is when my daughter Allison and I decided to roll up our sleeves and tackle this head on. We were determined to learn everything we could about health, nutrition, and anything good that would improve our lives.
We quickly became overwhelmed because there was so much information to take in, and much of it was conflicting. It seemed daunting to do a complete overhaul of our life in one day. Some days it felt so impossible to take control of our health that we found ourselves close to giving up. We then decided our mission was to simplify the process of becoming healthy. We did this by slowly changing our habits and adding in new ones day by day. Over time these small changes added up and led to big results. Our lives and our health had been drastically transformed without a massive amount of time and stress.
After much research (and trial and error) we have found that what makes the biggest difference for our well being is what is…
REAL and GOOD.
We want to take care of our bodies by using REAL things, things that are more a product of nature than a product of industry. We eat real food and use real cleaning products, and in general bring only real and natural things into our home that benefit our physical health. We also try to take care of our mind and soul by surrounding ourselves with GOOD things, because through our experiences we learned that mental health and physical health go hand in hand. While we definitely see the value in traditional medicine and use it ourselves, we ALSO want to do everything in our power to improve our health. We don’t just want to feel better, we want to thrive!
Even though we are still dealing with some health issues, that does not mean we have to walk through life deprived of emotional and spiritual wellness. We try on a daily basis to use the resources God has provided to help us flourish. We believe that God wants us to live up to our fullest potential and strive for vitality. Our goal is partly to heal our bodies and minds, but it is mostly to serve God. We believe that the life God has given us is an amazing gift, and we are grateful that he has entrusted us with our physical bodies and minds. We consider it our duty to take care of these gifts to the best of our ability, so that we can serve Him and His people most effectively.
“Surviving is for those who have no hope.
That’s not you – not if you’re God’s child.
You were meant to thrive.”
